This years big Fords were fresh from the tires up. Basic chassis and suspension changed only in detail, but wheelbase was stretched 2 inches to 121 where it would remain up until 1978. The fist such increase since 1960. Overall length went up from 213.3 inches to as much as 216.9 inches on some models, and their were fractional gains in track and overall width. Ford wanted buyers to know the new models were big and plush, pointing out that they had a track as wide as a Cadillac, more headroom than an Imperial, more leg room than a Chrysler and that the ‘69 was again as stated by Ford in ‘65, quieter than a Rolls-Royce. The big Ford engine lineup was rearranged. Replacing the old 427 as the top option was the new Thunderjet 429 V-8. There were two versions, a 2V 320 HP unit and a 4V 360 HP engine, both running 10.5:1 compression and requiring premium fuel. The 150 HP 6 was base power for all models except the LTD and Country Squire wagon which came with a 200 HP 302. Also available was a 2V 265 HP 390 and at mid season the new 351 Windsor in 250 HP 2V form. A 4 speed manual gearbox was still optional, but only with the new 4V 429.
